1825 – 2026
Every published exhibit, in the order the events happened.
1825 — present
The Cape Florida Lighthouse was first lit on 17 December 1825 and is the oldest structure still standing in Miami-Dade County. For two centuries it guided sailors past the Florida Reef, surviving hurricanes, war and fire. On the two-hundredth anniversary of that first light the Friends of Cape Florida kept the bicentennial at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, and a three-dimensional survey of the tower and the keeper's cottage was projected onto the lighthouse itself.
1961 — present
At the edge of Miami Executive Airport stand a B-26 bomber in Cuban Air Force markings and a granite pillar angled toward Cuba. The memorial honours the ten Cuban and four American airmen of Brigade 2506's Liberation Air Force killed over Bahía de Cochinos in April 1961. It exists because of Captain Amado Cantillo, a veteran of the invasion who spent close to forty years finding the aircraft, securing the ground and raising the money.
